About CPMA

What is an Internist, D.O., P.A., and a Nurse Practitioner

Doctors of internal medicine focus on adult medicine and  have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult disease.  Internists are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings - no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex. They bring to a patient an understanding of wellness, disease prevention, and promotion of health. Internists take pride in caring for their patients for life - in the office, during hospitalization and intensive care, and in the nursing home.

D.O.'s are osteopathic physicians fully trained and licensed to practice all phases of medicine, including performing surgery and prescribing medicine.  Osteopathic medicine is dedicated to treating and healing the entire patient as a whole, rather than focusing on one system or body part.  They hold to the principle that  a patient's history of illness and physical trauma are written into the body's structure. Doctors of osteopathic medicine may be found in nearly any health care setting, from community clinics and private practices, to academic medical centers.

Physicians Assistants are board certified medical professionals who diagnosis illness, manage treatment plans, and prescribe medications.  They work as part of a collaborative healthcare team across all specialties but often can serve as a patient's principal healthcare provider.

A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed advanced education and training in the diagnosis and management of common medical conditions, including chronic illnesses.  They provide a broad range of health care services while maintaining a close working relationship with physicians.  A nurse practitioner can serve as a patient's regular health care provider.  The core philosophy of the field is individualized care that is comparable to that provided by the physician. They make prevention, wellness, and patient education their priorities.
